AUTUMN
Fallen Leaves
The first thing that comes to mind when we think of autumn, are the beautiful colors as nature gives us one last hurrah before winter. But, sooner or later, the leaves responsible for that color will fall down.
Leaving them out in the garden for too long can cause all sorts of problems, from smothering lawns to causing slip and fall hazards on hardscape.
Taking care of them now prevents this and keeps the garden looking tidy.
Pruning
Autumn is a great time for pruning soft fruit bushes, herbacous perrenials, meditaranean plants and hedges.
But knowing what to prune, how to prune, and importantly what not to prune requires an experienced gardener with an eye for detail.
Getting it done the right way now means a better, healthier garden next year.
New Plantings
Summer heat is over, but the soil is still warm. Which means now is the ideal time to add new plants to the garden.
Roots will have time to grow before the frost sets in and transplant shock is far less likely to occur.
Wether it’s decidious or evergreen perennials, now is the time to get them in the ground and give them a head start over those planted in spring.
Annuals provide great color and interest. But they only live for one season. Once they’re done they should be removed and the beds tidied up.
Doing this before winter keeps the garden clean, free from pest and disease and sets the stage for replanting in spring.
Irrigation
A garden irrigation system is a costly investment and should be serviced properly. After the end of summer droughts and before winter freezes set in, the system requires a proper winterisation service.
This includes checking all pipes and valves for debris and damages, and doing a blow out of the entire system to drain water out of it, and prevent frost damage.
Now is also a great time for installing a new system, or expanding an existing one.
